The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith based organization, has a job opening for a VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR for the Birmingham Command, located in Birmingham, Alabama. 

Job Summary – Plans, coordinates and manages the volunteer program for the Area Command; recruits, trains, cultivates relationships and supervises volunteers; provides education and awareness of The Army’s programs and volunteer opportunities to the community; manages the program so that it retains an adequate force of volunteers ensuring ample staff to meet program needs; prepares records and reports regarding the same, processes and maintains volunteer applications, files and records.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Knowledge of The Salvation Army social service programs. Knowledge of community agencies, organizations, and corporations within the local area. Knowledge of effective implementation of recruitment strategies. Ability to work with others to motivate them to give of their time and skills to The Salvation Army. Skill in marketing to a professional volunteer audience. Experience performing management, outreach, recruitment, and public speaking. Ability to follow instructions and work with limited supervision. Ability to prepare accurate and complete records and reports. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers. Ability to lead, motivate and evaluate the work of volunteers. Ability to project a professional and positive image of The Salvation Army. Ability to participate in The Salvation Army Safe from Harm training in order to gain the understanding of appropriately working with volunteers and individuals in the community. 

Education and Experience - Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing or related field, and Three years of experience managing a volunteer base OR any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  

Licenses and Certifications - Valid state driver license. 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions - Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to speak before large groups in person, by radio and television. Ability to travel to various locations in order to participate in public meetings, conference, etc. Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking. Physical ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull light objects (less than 25 lbs.).  

Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. Work involves driving a vehicle to special events and meetings where there may be physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with working in a warehouse during the Christmas Angel Tree Program.
