The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has an opening for an Territorial Auditor for the Southern Territory Headquarters, located in Atlanta, Georgia.
Plans, conducts and reviews internal audits throughout the Southern Territory on behalf of The Salvation Army to discover weakness in accounting systems, fiscal controls and possible fraud; audits books and verifies reconciliations to determine compliance with established Salvation Army, accounting and bookkeeping policies and procedures; prepares reports and provides recommendations to improve accounting and bookkeeping methods, practices, and procedures; identifies and quantifies risks associated with noted audit exceptions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of Salvation Army policies, practices and procedures relating to accounting and financial reporting. Knowledge of the parameters of Salvation Army expenditures as set forth in the official minute book. Knowledge of audit statement preparation for non-profit organizations. Knowledge of the use, operation and capabilities of computer systems. Knowledge of the general principles and practices of mathematics, accounting, bookkeeping and finance. Ability to conduct thorough internal audits and to prepare and maintains accurate and complete reports in a timely manner. Ability to prepare accurate financial statements and to verify reconciliations. Ability to recognize the mishandling and/or misappropriation of funds. Ability to apply discretion and independent judgement with limited supervision. Ability to discern the capabilities or deficiencies of accounting and bookkeeping personnel in the units being audited. Ability to counsel Salvation Army personnel in their discharge of duties relating to business, finance, and accounting. Ability to discharge the duties and responsibilities of this position consistent with the principles, standards, and Orders and Regulations of The Salvation Army. Ability to conduct the affairs of this office responsibly, efficiently, and economically, in an atmosphere of positivity, warmth, helpfulness, and kindness that models an image that always advances the values and mission of The Salvation Army including times when audits uncover negative information or compliance concerns. Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to manipulate and scrutinize numbers. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding audit reports and issues raised.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance or a related field, and Two years’ experience performing accounting, bookkeeping or auditing work, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses & Certifications:
Valid State Driver’s License
One or more certifications preferred: Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or Certified Internal Controls Auditor (CICA)
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
Constant amount of physical effort required associated with hand movement, holding, finger dexterity, reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, vision, hearing, talking and sitting at least 90% of the work time; rare to occasional amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting up to 30 lbs., pushing, pulling, climbing, bending, squatting, crawling, and reaching at least 30% of the work time. Frequent overnight travel throughout the Southern Territory. Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
