About this Position: 

Under the general supervision of the VP of External Affairs, the Communications Director manages and leads the public and media relations functions of Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawai‘i, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky (PPGNHAIK) and Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates, Serving AK, HI, ID, IN, KY, WA (PPAA) and the content delivered for these and related entities. The Communications Director oversees communications staff to raise organizational profiles, build reach, and develop, execute, and evaluate strategic communications plans and messaging campaigns to advance health care, legislative, and advocacy objectives

Salary range: $79,451 to $119,176 annually, based on experience.

This role would need to be placed of either western Washington (near Seattle admin offices) area or near Indianapolis, Indiana (admin offices). Relocation negotiable.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Directs the overarching messaging and communications strategy, vision, and deliverables for PPGNHAIK and PPAA, and advances Planned Parenthood’s brand, marketing initiatives, media strategy, and for PPAA, legislative, political, and advocacy work. 
  • Develops overall message frame and creative, sharp communications strategies across the six-state region, and oversees implementation of those strategies to meet organizational goals. 
  • Works internally and externally to develop messaging and communications that are appropriate for and inclusive of a broad range of audiences.
  • Develops and manages robust and consistent media relations strategy to expand and grow PPAA presence in public narrative, including analyzing media coverage and managing relationships with government/political reporters, as well as building targeted media lists.
  • Serves as lead agency spokesperson on broad range of issues. Coaches, trains and prepares senior leaders for interviews with local, regional, and national media outlets.
  • Collaborates with PPAA field teams to develop and oversee a robust storytelling program to elevate the voices of our patients in communications initiatives and campaigns.
  • Manages the coordination of subject-matter experts to serve as spokespeople throughout the affiliate. Arranges and/or participates in high-visibility and/or regional or national interviews and handles prep and media training. Staffs key spokespeople at interviews and visibility events.
  • Represents PPGNHAIK/PPAA on multi-organization communication teams; maintains positive working relationships with key communications staff in the reproductive rights community and larger progressive community throughout six states.
  • Contributes to broader strategies and direction of the various departments within PPGNHAIK and supports the successful execution of communications campaigns and initiatives that advance organizational goals using inclusive and equitable messages and strategies.
  • Oversees development of press materials, including news releases, media alerts, op-eds, ensuring they meet organizations brand and overall message frame and goals. Reviews and edits key collateral (brochures, speeches, briefings, etc.). 
  • Partners with the PPAA VPs and State Directors, to protect and promote sexual and reproductive rights by developing creative, equitable, and inclusive messaging and communications plans and strategies for community education and engagement, legislative and political advocacy, and voter engagement.
  • Cultivates relationships with a diverse array of local and national media, bloggers, social media influencers, and community organizations to spread PPGNHAIK/PPAA messages and strengthen partnerships. 
  • Serves as liaison with Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) in communications and media from and about our states, and elevates the work of our organizations, states, teams, communities, and elected officials within PPFA/PPAF communications.
  • Remains relevant and current on latest PPFA and PPAF talking points, messaging framework and strategy and incorporates as appropriate as part of campaign efforts; tailors for spokespersons and/or internal or local distribution, as needed.
  • Provides crisis communications counsel and support to senior management, including planning, developing press statements, Q&A, and talking points. Coordinates with PPFA/PPAF communications team, as needed. Serves as lead media contact in crisis situations.
  • Maintains appropriate separation and branding between organizational entities in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations

You’ll need to have:

EducationBA/BS in journalism, marketing, communications or related field required.

ExperienceMinimum of 8-10 years experience in a media/public relations role, nonprofit, government relations and public affairs OR with a news agency. Minimum of 4 years experience supervising staff. 

Proof of current COVID-19 Vaccine and proof of recent Influenza Vaccine are required for employment with PPGNHAIK.
