Director of Development, Major Gifts, IU Radio/TV
The Indiana University Foundation, in partnership with IU Radio and Television Services/ Indiana Public Media (known publicly as Indiana Public Media and WFIU/WTIU), is searching for the next Director of Development, Major Gifts to further the mission of the RTVS and play an integral role in the philanthropic and outreach efforts.
In concert with the Executive Director, the Director of Development brings vision, drive and creativity to reach ambitious fundraising goals, leads the strategic direction for a comprehensive and coordinated development program that includes all aspects of fundraising and membership including annual fund/membership, assistance in acquiring grants, corporate and foundation giving, planned giving, major and principal gifts, and opening new revenue markets. This position reports to the Vice President of Development, Bloomington at IU Foundation (IUF), with a dotted line to the Executive Director of IU RTVS.
The Director of Development will be a passionate and knowledgeable advocate for public service journalism, an inspiring and effective leader and manager, an articulate and persuasive communicator and a relationship-builder of the highest integrity with extensive and meaningful face to face fundraising experience. This is a unique opportunity to serve on the leadership team, to work with a cadre of talented colleagues, donors, the community advisory boards, and Indiana University Foundation’s designated liaison, and others to maximize support for Radio and Television Services and generate the momentum to reach the financial and programmatic goals for Radio and Television Service and its constituents. The Director of Development will be an enthusiastic representative of Radio and Television Services, building relationships across the community to advance a culture of inclusivity and opportunity and to increase WTIU and WFIU’s television and radio visibility, impact and financial resources.
Experience and Skills Required:
- Prior experience in a large, complex, matrixed higher-education environment or public television/radio including evidence of effective strategic planning and implementation of action plans;
- Ability to handle multiple demands and/or manage complex and competing priorities;
- Experience related to all aspects of planning and successfully executing large fundraising campaigns including working with academic leaders and preparing transformative and complex gift proposals;
- Possess an ability to work comfortably within an academic environment that possesses many competing interests, priorities, and opinions;
- Proven analytical skills – proficiency at framing and solving complex problems, proficiency in using large databases (e.g., standard fundraising data) to setting goals and identifying opportunities for improvement particularly as it relates to gift officer performance;
- An understanding of the importance of, and demonstrated success in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion among staff and volunteers;
- Excellent knowledge of fundraising with a general knowledge of marketing, and communications, as well as demonstrated skills in major and planned gift solicitation and experience with major gift prospect management systems;
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering collaboration across advancement disciplines;
- Success developing authentic relationships with a wide array of internal and external stakeholders;
- Apply critical thinking to analyze and interpret information and/or data;
- Use discretion and maintain privacy, confidentiality or anonymity;
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
- Exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills (able to tailor communications to multiple audiences). Precision, timeliness, clarity, and accuracy in written communication are vital.
Bachelor's Degree is required, an advanced degree in a related is preferred.
Minimum of 8 years’ experience in fundraising or relevant experience in a large complex organization including proven success in major gift development work and leadership experience required. Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.
CFRE credential is preferred. Previous experience in Public Media preferred.
